Tanyel Tries: An at-home lipstick maker that creates any shade

Welcome back to Tanyel Tries, our beauty column by which lifestyle reporter and beauty nerd Tanyel Mustafa tests out the latest products and trends to let you know whether they get our approval – or should be trashed.

Last year, I wrote about how beauty tech was developing – and just how products are getting smarter.

For that, I spoke to the mind behind among the coolest bits of beauty tech out there: a personalised, at-home lipstick maker.

It's the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Sur Mesure Run by Perso – a tool that costs lb250 and can create as numerous lipstick shades as you like.

I got to road test drive it for a few days. Is it worth it?

So so how exactly does it work?

You load the device track of the colour family you want to create from (e.g. reds, oranges, nudes-) and you download an application. There you decide on the color lipstick you want from a colour wheel, or you can take a picture of something and it'll create that colour in a lipstick.

Say you need to suit your lipstick for your dress, have a picture of the dress and it'll do as near a match as possible using AI.

It's very fun to play with, as you can produce a new colour in a matter of seconds.

If you're someone that owns multiple lipsticks and never finishes them, this could be the way to go – yes, it is a more costly device upfront, but one cartridge lasts a long time and there is far less waste involved.

Over a couple of days, I had been in a position to create multiple lipstick shades and only used 1% of the cartridge (keep in mind, I created way more colours for the sake of testing than I would basically were using this on a regular day).

For someone that wears one lipstick only, save your money as this'll be wasted you – it truly is for the trend-obsessed beauty lover.

The colour cartridges are easy to swap in and out – the unit knows automatically and can refresh itself to match the right colour family.

One oversight using the orange set is you can't create a tangerine shade, which seemed bizarre in my experience – so there are some limits as to the colours you can make, but just about anything you can want can there be.

If you compromise on a colour, the top device detaches so you've a compact to visit around with containing your lipstick colour for the day, along with a lip brush.

This could be annoying to wash if you need a bullet lipstick (much like me), but the compact is chic using the YSL logo on it and a mirror inside – hardly the scariest thing to hold around.

One fill of lipstick provides you with lots of goes at topping up, which means you don't have to worry about running out of colour for the day.

And when it comes to lipstick formula itself, it's comfortable, not drying, includes a slight satin finish, which last a reasonable period of time. It feels high-end.

It is, after all, YSL.

When it was time to come back the unit, Used to with a heavy heart – it had been genuinely a joyful experience to make use of, with simply a few small flaws (like the cleaning issue).

With Christmas coming up, I imagine this would make an excellent gift for any lipstick lover – they'll never exhaust options.
