The storyline behind luxury candle brand Diptyque's most iconic scent, Baies

Diptyque is among the most coveted candle and fragrance brands available.

You'll have experienced their products in glamourous Instagram flat-lays and in the bedrooms and bathrooms of YouTubers.

Every beauty editor rejoices whenever a package from the company arrives – they really are a special affair.

Their simple, elegant, delicately placed black and white lettered labels can be selected from the mass of products easily.

Brands such as this enter into their own around gifting season. Who wouldn't want a luxuriously scented candle within an great looking votive, which can be repurposed after as a the most glamorous cotton pad holder available?

The case for going luxe

It's hardly as easy as 'burning away' money, as some might criticise the action of spending more about these types of items.

Candles along with other scent-givers can elevate anything from an area, for your mood, to an ambience.

Diptyque may be the brainchild Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Yves Coueslant and Desmond Knox-Leet. All originating from artsy backgrounds, it makes sense they created something so chic.

Trends come and go, but Diptyque has somehow stayed current.

'Customers shop with Diptyque as they trust the quality and the creativity from the maison,' explains Amanda Morgan, UK managing director.

When you're buying right into a luxe brand with a long history, you're bringing home a slice of this heritage and reputation.

'When you are looking at home fragrance, the distinctive sign of Diptyque candles is a result of the high quality of the raw materials and the purity of the wax.

'Diptyque was among the first houses to blend wax and perfume for the first time, using their group of three candles: Aubépine, Thé and Cannelle (hawthorne, tea, cinnamon).'

Diptyque utilizes a mix of mineral and plant waxes within their candles and spends time leveling out scent concentrations, because there is not a one-formula-fits-all method for new releases.

Though proficient at championing their classics, the brand also designs new scents every year, which could take everything from a 6 months to a couple years to create.

'It's difficult to predict how long the process will take,' Amanda says, suggesting just a little perfectionism in the brand – though no bad thing, from the consumer perspective.

'The last question is about the degree of concentration and also the maceration process – the higher isn't necessarily the better,' she adds.

The marked difference between a luxe logo and high-street choice is usually in how far the scent itself spreads across a room when lit – the former offering much more in the way of projection.

Going luxe can alter the experience of simply illuminating or spritzing on.

How to get the most out of your candle

Amanda recommends following 'the Diptyque ritual'.

  • The very first time you light a scented candle, burn it for at least one hour to allow the wick soak up the wax and burn evenly. This will form a homogeneous melting pool and avoid the wax hollowing out (also known as tunnelling). Light candles which are 190g large for two or three hours and hours.
  • Regularly trim the wick as if you would cut the stems of the bouquet having a wick trimmer to prevent any unnecessary smoke. Re-centre the wick, once you blow out your candle, to prevent the glass blackening. To preserve the aroma of the candle, cover it by putting on a lid, once it has cooled down.

How everything began

The brand – who started with candles first – are celebrating their 60th anniversary with a launch of new limited edition scents, but the one everyone comes back to is Baies; their bestselling and perhaps most iconic fragrance.

Though known best in its candle format nowadays, the blend of blackcurrent leaves and roses actually began its life as a room perfume.

Amanda tells us: 'The scent was inspired with a memory of Diptyque's founders' good friend, Dido Merwin, who had been the creator from the potpourris, developed in the pure English tradition and sold at Diptyque in the early days.

'The fragrance was created by a moment in time preserved within the memories of Dido, who eventually was picking roses for her bouquets and blackcurrants on her jams.

'As she brought her hands to her face, she was struck through the combined scent of the flowers and fruit.'

She then used these items from her garden – blackcurrant branches and roses – to create a decorative centerpiece (by means of fresh potpourris) for that table in a dinner party she was throwing. The guests were amazed, and that's the foundation story.

Before that came these scented candles in 1963, and in exactly the same year the brand's signature design was solidified.

'A great lover of calligraphy, Desmond set towards the task of designing the portrait of the unique House: a very 18thcentury medallion, using the pattern of the fabric created in 1963, 'Prétorien'; a personality with Celtic overtones; a black trace revealing the ever so slight trembling of the hand,' says Amanda.

'Oval, dancing letters, little fragrance scenes, the duality of monochrome, the elements of the original and timeless graphic structure which now define the brand making it recognizable instantly.'

'Sober and poetic' because the brand founders were, based on Amanda, 5 years later they unveiled their first eau de toilette, L'Eau.

'A bold simplicity, a precursor temperament- A dark tone was set,' Amanda adds.

Now, you cannot go wrong with this for any gift of any sort.
