The winter months are known to wreak havoc on our skin.
From crusty lips to eczema and psoriasis flare ups, dry skin turns into a huge problem once the temperature drops.
One often ignored part of the body that can take an extra hit during winter may be the hands.
'It's not surprising that skin needs extra protection during the cold months, harsh winds and dry central heating go ahead and take moisture out of skin as quickly as you can put it on,' explains Vicky Lyons, the co-founder of Lyonsleaf The Republic of Natural Skincare brand.
'So it is extra vital that you repair and keep the surface of skin (the Stratum Corneum) that seals moisture in and keeps pathogens out.'
How to avoid getting dry hands in winter
Dr Adam Friedmann, consultant dermatologist at Stratum Clinics offers tips for taking care of our hands in the winter months:
Avoid prolonged connection with overly cold or hot water, particularly if it has detergents (use cotton-lined gloves for washing up, for example).
Moisturisers add a waterproof coating onto the skin thereby reducing evaporative loss of water from the skin so the greasier the product, the better this function is completed.
To result in the moisturiser creamier and much more acceptable, ingredients for example nicotinamide, glycerol, urea, ceramides, and fatty acids are added to behave like water magnets and hold onto water for extended.
Using an air humidifier in the winter months once the air is drier can be helpful as this is once the skin is more vulnerable to dehydration.
Always wear gloves when going out in cold weather.
Why 100 % natural ingredients are essential for hand care
Hand care products produced from natural ingredients, for example plant oils, waxes and butters, could be much more good at keeping our hands soft during wintertime.
Choosing a product that chooses these natural remedies rather than an emulsion of oil and water, then, can perform wonders.
'This happens because the lipids within the natural oils of the epidermis, that stick the cells of the Stratum Corneum together, are constructed with the identical essential fatty acids that make up natural plant oils,' says Lyons.
'If you ever embarked with an Arctic expedition, for instance, you would be advised to take a balm moisturiser with you because water will freeze on the skin, whereas a balm will seal and protect it from the harshest elements,' she adds.
Marshmallow root is one natural ingredient Lyons suggests to look out for if you wish to care for your hands.
'Marshmallow includes a great reputation as an anti-ageing herb,' she says.
'This happens because it hydrates, smoothes and repairs like no other herb.
'It also repairs hands that are dry, chapped or sore from dish washing, cleaning or excessive hand-washing, probably since it contains polysaccharides and flavonoids that are related to tissue repair.'
