No it's possible to deny the significance of skincare.
It's vital to keeping the skin we have looking fresh and healthy and it is a wondrous form of self-care.
However, unless you are educated in the subject, it can be a minefield.
From cleansers to toners to peels, it's sometimes hard to get a handle onto it and often we simply wing it.
Unfortunately, this can cause havoc with our skin and do more harm than good. It's not hard to use incorrect products for the issue available or rely on them within the wrong way.
Are we over or under exfoliating? Shall we be using an excessive amount of serum?
To combat these issues and skin missteps we asked skincare experts some simple skin questions which will bring us to basics.
How many steps don't let have in a skincare routine?
Award winning beauty therapist Kristina Shepherd says to not over complicate your routine and to keep it clean and simple.
'A basic skincare routine should contain a cleanser, serum, SPF, and a night cream,' she urges. 'This is exactly what everyone should be on.
'Other products for example eye creams could be added when a person has got into a really solid routine.'
She adds that exfoliation is one thing we shouldn't ignore.
'Exfoliation is essential to skin health,' she explains. 'It removes the top layers of dead skin cells in the surface of the epidermis and allows new fresh skin cells to build up.
'This allows serums and moisturisers to penetrate deeper for better results.
'The top two to three layers of the skin in the epidermis are the dead skin cells, so applying products to the surface of the skin whenever you don't exfoliate is never getting you the results you would like.'
Meanwhile, Dr Ross Perry of Cosmedics says if you are afraid or apprehensive, begin small.
'Skincare should be a simple routine that's something you will find you'll be able to do consistently,' he notes. 'Apply a simple moisturiser after washing and having allowed your skin to dry is a simplistic way of maintaining the skin's natural defence mechanisms.'
How long should you invest in each skincare step?
In a recent TikTok video, skin expert Mattie Lacey-Davidson told her followers they must be cleansing their face for at least A minute before washing off to give the product enough time to work. Kristina states that although this is no industry standard, it is a good number to follow along with.
'In my professional opinion A minute is ideal for paying for cleansing skin,' she advises. 'It allows enough time for all of the components to penetrate through the layers of the epidermis and also to obtain the full benefit from the product.'
She continues: 'A toner is just used to restore the pH of your skin; this is actually the only reason why a toner can be used and only takes seconds. Serums and eye creams need around Ten seconds each to apply.
'They aren't particularly time-consuming but they're important in a routine, especially at night as your skin heals, repairs and restores itself while you sleep.'
What common mistakes do people keep making with regards to skincare?
Kristina says product choice is skincare trap we keep falling into.
'Buying cheap products may be the biggest mistake ,' she says. 'All goods are very different but cheaper products are usually lower quality skincare.
'A large amount of my clients when they first come to the salon say that they buy high-street products and nothing is working. You need to upgrade your skincare to cosmeceutical products and seek expert consultancy before starting your new routine. This means are utilizing the best products for your skin type.'
