Our relationship with beauty must change through the years – just like the skin we have does.
However, turning a certain age is by no means is a sign you will need to split up with your makeup – you simply ay want to switch some misconception a little to make sure you're still getting the best out of your routine.
After all, your skin of somebody within their 20s has very different needs to the skin of somebody in their 40s.
That's why Saffron Hughes, a makeup artist with FalseEyelashes.co.uk, has come up with her some tips how your beauty regimen should switch to account for the passing of time.
20s beauty routine
Saffron says your 20s is when you have to establish a good skincare routine as the foundation for the skincare in the years to come.
'This will set you up to find the best skin throughout your lifetime and make for any flawless base to your makeup,' she explains.
'After age 20, the dermis layer produces only 1% less collagen every year. This is a natural part of the ageing process, and skin within our 20s continues to be extremely supple, less elastic and bright. For this reason, we have the advantage of exploring more with this makeup colours, formulas, and product types.
'Wash the face twice a day having a gentle cleanser, keep your skin hydrated by moisturising and drinking plenty of water, and wear sunscreen every single day – all year round.
'Makeup-wise, this is your time for you to shine – literally. Embrace the illumination of highlighter, wear bright and bold colours, and go for sheer coverage, which means you don't hide your youthful, rosy cheeks.
'With false eyelashes, don't stack or choose thick eyelashes, as this can age you. Instead, go for natural and light-weight lashes.'
30s beauty routine
Saffron says your 30s could be the first time you notice yourself aging because of the dip in collagen and elastin production that tends to happen in this decade of our lives.
'Relationships, families and work often allow it to be harder to possess time to invest in a whole makeup routine,' she adds.
To save your time, Saffron recommends opting for two-in-one products, like moisturisers with SPF.
'It could be tempting to put more product on the face whenever you notice signs of ageing but stay with lightweight concealers and foundations which won't crease or settle into wrinkles,' she advises.
'Whilst you can't improve your skin type, you can change the appearance of it with subtle contouring. Brighten underneath the eyes by blending a white concealer together with your light, skin-toned concealer and use contour powder to define and sculpt your face.'
40s beauty routine
While Saffron says it is important for all of us to pay more care and attention towards the products we choose within our 40s, she says there's no need for all of us to stop on fun looks simply because we've hit a certain age.
'The beauty market is so tied to ageing once you reach 40,' she says, 'and I think that's unfair as beauty really has no age. Just because you've hit 40 does not mean you have to give up eyeliner, coloured eyeshadow, and lipstick.
'You just have to improve your technique and select the right products for the new skin type.'
So what products don't let look out for?
'Avoid drying lipstick formulas,' Saffron explains, 'which are unflattering and may highlight fine lines. These are usually mattes and nudes. Instead, go for sheer colours with shine, which will accentuate the plumpness of your lips instead.
'Don't ditch your eyeliner too but adjust your technique, so you are just applying a little wing to the outer third of the lash line, rather than thick black liner throughout which can make your eyes look dark and dull.
'Finally, pick more flattering colours for your age. Don't choose bright blues, but rather go for shimmery pinks and golds around the lid. Continue your skincare routine to keep hormonal imbalances towards the skin away.'
50s beauty routine
In our 50s, we'll likely see our lips changing shape because of the introduction to collagen and fat pads under the skin we have.
Saffron also says our body hair might begin to thin, which could make our eyebrows thinner.
'Avoid comparing the way your appearance looks now, to how it was once,' she says.
To combat some of these changes, Saffron recommends: 'Get the plump shape back into your lips by using a lip liner. Top this having a beautiful, tinted balm to add definition, shine and hydration into the lips.
'For your eyebrows, purchase a good brow pencil, where you can mimic hair-like strokes to complete any sparse areas. Create hide your wrinkles with heavy foundation and concealer, but embrace the wonder In them instead.
'Even the complexion having a light concealer only around the inner corners and underneath the eyes to eliminate any dark circles and brighten your skin. Make use of a light, hydrating moisturiser because the base of the makeup to add a glow for your complexion.'
